Abstract

Masquerade institutions continue to play a vital role in many societies, serving as a means of cultural expression, social critique, and community building. This study therefore seeks to Explore the Theatrical Aesthetics of Ekwe and Iganya Masquerades in Igalaland. The methodology used to gather data is the survey research method. Both primary and secondary sources were used for data collection. Findings reveals that the presence of costumes, masks, music, dances, among others in the performances of these masquerades makes it theatrical and a beauty to behold. The study concludes that, masquerade institutions are an essential part of community life in many African cultures and the beauty of the rich African cultural heritage can be shown through masquerade performances such as Ekwe and Iganya masquerades. Based on the above conclusion, the study recommends among others that, indigenous performances like masquerade performances in Igala land should not be banished into the fetish realm, rather, it should be held with utmost importance especially those that are sources of economic empowerment to the performers and even to the government through tourist attraction.
