Abstract
Despite the centrality of sound in cinematic storytelling, scholarly discourse on Nollywood has predominantly privileged visual aesthetics, themes, and screenwriting, with film sound often relegated to a technical afterthought. This study interrogates the narrative functions of sound design in Nollywood, using Charles Okwuowulu’s Tara’s Diary (2021) as a case study. Adopting a qualitative single-case study approach, the study employs textual and semiotic analysis of selected scenes, grounded in Gorbman’s (1987) theory of film music and narrative agency and Chion’s (1994) concept of audio-vision. It examines how dialogue, diegetic and non-diegetic sound effects, ambient noise, and music interact to construct atmosphere, advance plot, convey character psychology, and situate the film within a specific cultural context. The findings demonstrate that sound design in Tara’s Diary operates not as mere background accompaniment, but as an active narrative agent. It heightens dramatic tension, marks narrative transitions, and deepens audience emotional immersion. The study further reveals that intentional acoustic choices and improved technical capacity in contemporary Nollywood are instrumental to enhancing production quality and storytelling coherence. Consequently, this paper argues for the repositioning of sound design as a foundational element of Nollywood storytelling. It contributes to the growing discourse on African cinematic aesthetics by foregrounding the auditory dimension as central to meaning-making in Nollywood films.
